APEC Industrial Property Symposium and

IPR Get-Together (Press Release)

Japanese Patent Office (JPO)

  1. The Japanese Patent Office (JPO), which belongs to Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), hosted the "APEC Industrial Property Symposium" on 28-29 August in Tokyo (Hotel Okura).

  2. This Symposium provided the first opportunity that senior officials of industrial property authorities of all 18 APEC Member economies got together and exchanged their views.

  3. Vietnam, in addition to the 18 APEC members, also participated in this Symposium as an official guest.

  4. The Symposium consisted of four sessions under the subtitle "on the Development of Industrial Property Systems toward the 21st Century."
    • Session 1: Industrial property systems- Past, Present and Future
    • Session 2: Implementation of the WTO TRIPS Agreement
    • Session 3: Enhancing APEC-wide Cooperation
    • Session 4: Concluding Discussion

  5. The Concluding session, chaired by Commissioner Arai of JPO, adopted "Joint Statement" as attached, addressing the importance of improving industrial property rights protection.

  6. In conjunction with the Symposium, the third session of APEC Intellectual Property Get-Together, an ad hoc experts group within APEC, was held on 26-27 August. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Shigeo Takakura, Director for International Cooperation, JPO. At this meeting, members agreed upon a detailed work plan to implement the "Osaka Action Agenda," which was adopted by the APEC Leaders last November.
