First Informal Meeting of the Heads of Patent Offices in Certain Developed Nations

  1. Background
  With the recent globalization and borderlessness of economic activities, an adequate protection of intellectual property rights on an international scale has been regarded as an indispensable factor for the promotion of technology development and a healthy competition because intellectual property rights are outcomes of development activities.

  The Informal Meeting of the Heads of Patent Offices in Developed Nations is aimed at discussing the future direction of intellectual property systems.   At this meeting, the heads of patent offices in developed nations will frankly exchange opinions from a global standpoint as we move toward the 21st century.

  This meeting is welcomed by the Quadrilateral Trade Ministers Meeting in Tokyo of May 11-12.
