JPO Commissioner Visited Thailand and Vietnam to Exchange Opinions on Intellectual Property.

December 25, 2014

Mr. Ito, Commissioner of the Japan Patent Office (JPO), held bilateral meetings with Ms. Malee Choklumlerd, Director General of the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) of Thailand, on December 22; and Mr. Tran Van Tung, Deputy Minister, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of Vietnam on December 23, respectively.

At the meeting with Director General Malee of the DIP, Mr. Ito was given an explanation about the current state of intellectual property initiatives that the DIP is conducting to make its examination process more efficient and effective. They also exchanged views on future directions of the bilateral cooperation agenda, including strengthening cooperation in the field of patent examinations. Going forward, the JPO will invite patent examiners from the DIP to attend the training programs on patent examination practices in the JPO.

Also, at the meeting with Deputy Minister Tung of the MOST, Mr. Ito exchanged opinions on several topics that included the ongoing progress of a project being coordinated by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to strengthen protection of intellectual property rights. The JPO has been advancing its efforts for the project by sending an expert to Vietnam on a long-term basis. In addition, Deputy Minister Tung and Commissioner Ito talked also about holding a government-private joint intellectual property seminar, which will be co-held by the JPO and the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam (NOIP) based on a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) between the JPO and the NOIP. The purpose of the seminar is to raise awareness on the importance of intellectual property. Going forward, the JPO will send its officials to this intellectual property seminar that will be held in Hanoi as well as to working-level meetings to be held at the NOIP, in order to discuss exchange of the publications, such as Official Gazettes for Patents, between the two offices.

The JPO is committed to further strengthening its cooperative relationships with both Thailand and Vietnam in the field of intellectual property.
