JPO Conducted Training Course on Industrial Property Examination (Basic Program) under the WIPO Funds-in-Trust/JAPAN

January 30, 2015

The JPO recently conducted another of its IPR Training Courses, this time conducting a training program called the Training Course on Industrial Property Examination (Basic Program) under the WIPO Funds-in-Trust/Japan. The course was conducted by the JPO in Tokyo from Monday, January 19th to Friday, January 30th, in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) through the WIPO Funds-in-Trust/Japan, a trust fund set up through voluntary contributions made by the government of Japan. It was a basic training program specifically designed for patent examiners and trademark examiners working at intellectual property (IP) offices in developing countries, including emerging countries, in order to enhance their basic knowledge about international treaties, intellectual property laws, examination guidelines, and search activities.

In the course, the 25 trainees, who were invited from countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, were divided into two groups, namely “patents” and “trademarks,” based on their respective areas of expertise. The trainees in each group learned about laws, examination guidelines, and infringement lawsuits in the field of patents or trademarks, while conducting practical exercises on them. They also had an opportunity to visit a Japanese company and a private office dealing with patents; and at the JPO, a senior examiner took them on a tour through the Examination Departments.

The trainees, by attending the training course that lasted for two weeks, obtained useful knowledge and experience on patents or trademarks. In addition, they deepened their mutual friendships. In the course, they also developed good relationships with persons in Japan involved in intellectual property. The JPO looks forward to the trainees’ playing even greater and active roles in the field of IP after they return to their countries.
