February 13, 2015

The JPO recently conducted another of its IPR Training Courses, this time conducting a training program called the Training Course on the IP Management and the Formulation and Implementation of Results-Based IP Office Plans under the WIPO Funds-in-Trust/Japan. The course was conducted by the JPO in Tokyo from Friday, February 6th to Friday, February 13th, in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) through the WIPO Funds-in-Trust/Japan, a trust fund set up through voluntary contributions made by the government of Japan. It was a training program specifically designed for administrative officers who work at administrative agencies involved with intellectual property, and from this fiscal year, some lectures have been newly added. They included lectures included lectures on how to manage patent examination operations and methods for developing human resources, two areas of specialties in which the JPO has a wealth of expertise.

This Course consisted of two main parts, one of which was conducted by JPO officials and the other by WIPO officials. Lectures by JPO officials mainly focused on how to manage patent examination operations, quality management, methods for developing patent examiners, and assistance activities for SMEs. Lectures by WIPO officials were conducted on policies, administrative work, and operational improvements in the field of intellectual property.

The 27 trainees, who were invited from countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, by attending the training course, were able to enhance their knowledge and experiences by learning about methods for formulating intellectual property policies and management of examination operations, which they need to know as administrative officers. In addition, they deepened their mutual friendships. In the course, they also developed good relationships with persons in Japan involved in intellectual property. The JPO looks forward to the trainees’ playing even greater and active roles in the field of IP after they return to their countries.
