JPO Conducted JPO/IPR OJT Course on the Practices for Madrid Protocol Trademark Filings for ASEAN Countries

February 18, 2015

The JPO recently conducted another of its JPO/IPR Training Courses, this time conducting a training program called the OJT Course on the Practices for Madrid Protocol Trademark Filings for ASEAN Countries for officials from the 10 member countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). In this latest course, which was held in Tokyo, the trainees were divided into two groups based on country. The first one was held from Tuesday, February 3rd through Monday, February 9th, and the second one was held from Thursday, February 12th through Wednesday, February 18th. This course, which was created in 2014, is designed to support the ASEAN IP Offices in their accession to the Madrid Protocol in 2015, which is a goal stated in the ASEAN IPRs Action Plan 2011-2015.

In the Course, the trainees attended classroom lectures on Madrid Protocol regulations, working procedures for formality examinations, and trademark examinations, in addition to receiving on-the-job (OJT) training, all conducted by JPO officials. They also had an opportunity to discuss with attorneys about issues on international trademark applications.

The trainees, after attending the training course, enhanced their knowledge and expertise by learning about the overall system of the Madrid Protocol. The course was done to enable the current non-member countries to prepare for their accession to the Madrid Protocol, and for the member countries to further improve their operational practices. In the course, they also developed good relationships with persons in Japan involved in intellectual property, including JPO officials. The JPO has high expectations that the trainees will play important and active roles in their countries.
