JPO Conducted Training Course for Patent Examiners on Specified Technology (Pharmaceutical) under the WIPO Funds-in-Trust/JAPAN

February 26, 2015

This course is one of the training programs created to focus on a specific technical field and designed for patent examiners. Taking into account the needs of the countries that were invited to attend, the course focused on the pharmaceutical field this year. The course was conducted from Thursday, February 19th to Thursday, February 26th, through the WIPO Funds-in-Trust/Japan, a trust fund set up by voluntary contributions made by the government of Japan.

For the training course, the trainees heard lectures that compared patent examination practices in various countries, conducted patent information searches, and discussed examination practices and case studies on patent disputes. In addition, the trainees had opportunities to have a discussion with a patent attorney, visit a company, as well as see how examinations are actually conducted in JPO’s Examination Department.

Through participating in this one-week training course, the 17 trainees from countries in Asia and Africa were able to enhance their specialized expertise and deepen their friendship with each other and ties with persons in Japan involved in intellectual property. The JPO looks forward to the trainees to play greater and active roles in the IP field after they return to their countries.
