High-Level Meeting on Intellectual Property was Held in Republic of Uganda

On March 25 to 26, the “High-Level Meeting for Members of Parliament of the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO)” was held in Kampala, the capital of Republic of Uganda. The Meeting was organized through the Japan Funds-in-Trust for Africa and LDCs,* a fund to which the Japanese government has been contributing. Mr. Kunihiko Shimano, Director-General of the Patent Examination Department (Electronic Technology) attended the Meeting from the JPO and made a presentation. He introduced the role of intellectual property (IP) in economic development, Japan’s IP policy, and cooperation between Japan and the IP authorities in African countries.

Director-General Shimano also exchanged opinions on the current situation and issues of protection of IP rights in Africa, support through the Japan Funds-in-Trust for Africa and LDCs, and other matters with Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament and Rt. Hon. Kahinda Otafiire, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs of Uganda, and Mr. Fernando Dos Santos, Director-General of the ARIPO.

*Japan Funds-in-Trust (FIT) for Africa and LDCs at WIPO

In fiscal year 2008, Japan established the Japan Funds-in-Trust for Africa and LDCs at the WIPO, a fund established to provide support for developing IP systems in Africa and least developed countries (LDCs).

The FIT is aimed at raising awareness in African countries on the importance of the IP system, developing human resources for administering and making effective use of the IP system, creating IP systems, establishing IP organizations, and strengthening IP protection. The Meeting was held as part of the FIT activities.
