JPO Participated in International Trademark Association (INTA) Annual Meeting and TM5 Mid-Term Meeting

May 14, 2015

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) participated, from May 2 to 6, in the International Trademark Association (INTA) Annual Meeting held in San Diego, USA, which is one of the largest events bringing together under one roof IP-related persons from countries around the world. Among various lectures, the JPO held a “JPO session” that introduced the latest application status and examination operations relating to the “Non-traditional Trademarks” for which applications started to be received from April 1, 2015. Following on from last year, a “JPO special exhibition booth” was also installed, featuring demonstrations of trademark searches using the J-PlatPat service that began on March 23, introductions to JPO policies and consultations regarding Japanese trademark system, etc., and the booth was visited by around 640 users.

The TM5 Mid-Term Meeting (consisting of the JPO, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (Trademarks and Designs) (OHIM), the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC), and the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO)) was also held on May 4 by taking the INTA Annual Meeting as an opportunity. At this meeting, reports were presented from each lead office concerning the state of progress of TM5 collaboration projects. The JPO reported on the state of progress of three projects, including that the written report on the JPO-led “Continuation/Expansion of Bad Faith Project” was officially published on the TM5 website. Also, a user session targeting general users was jointly held for the first time at this Mid-Term Meeting, where each office reported on its latest initiatives.

International Trademark Association (INTA): Association made up of more than 6,500 members from government bodies, educational institutions, and companies, etc. in 190 countries.
