The 5th ASEAN-JAPAN Heads of IPOs Meeting held in Nara

The 5th ASEAN-JAPAN Heads of Intellectual Property Offices(IPOs) Meeting was held on May 25, 2015 in Nara, Japan. At the Meeting, the JPO and the ASEAN IP Offices formulated the cooperation program on IP issues for fiscal year 2015, including the practices unique in the international application for trademark registration (Madrid Protocol), the quality management of patent examination, human resource development at each IP office, and IP office management schemes. In addition, they reaffirmed to continue to contribute to the achievement of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) through deepening cooperation among their countries from 2016 on, and adopted the “Joint Statement of The 5th ASEAN-JAPAN Heads of Intellectual Property Offices Meeting.”

Alongside the main meeting, the JPO had bilateral talks, and reaffirmed to strengthen cooperative relationship with each IP office uniquely focusing according to the implementation status and issues of the IP system and operation in each country. The JPO, for the first time, reached an agreement to exchange the patent information data including patent gazette, etc. with Singapore and the Philippines, respectively. In addition, the JPO signed on the MOU concerning bilateral cooperation with Brunei, Laos, and Thailand, respectively.
