JPO Conducted IPR Training Course on Managing IP

July 10, 2015

Under the aim of strengthening the protection of intellectual property rights (IPRs), the Japan Patent Office (JPO) has been inviting trainees from developing and emerging countries of the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, and Africa, and conducting training programs for them in Japan. From June 29 to July 10, the JPO conducted the JPO/IPR Training Course on Managing IP. This Course is designed for individuals from both the private and public sectors, who are involved with the management and effective use of IP, such as promoting industry-academia collaboration and technology transfer. The Course is aimed at enhancing the trainees’ expertise on overall management skills of IP in their respective countries, which is required by individuals performing the functions and duties responsible for managing IP at universities and research institutes. Twenty-nine trainees who attended the Course received lectures on various subjects focusing on IP management, including technology transfer from university to industry, the role of technology transfer agencies in Japan, R&D support for SMEs, assessment of IP asset values. They also engaged in practical exercises other than hearing lectures. Also, they visited companies to learn their IP management. The JPO has high expectations that the trainees will play important and active roles in their countries.
