JPO Conducted IPR Training Course for Latin America
on Patent Examination in Specific Technical Fields

August 6, 2015

Under the aim of strengthening the protection of intellectual property rights (IPRs), the Japan Patent Office (JPO) has been inviting trainees from developing and emerging countries of the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, and Africa, and conducting training programs for them in Japan. The programs are designed to support the development of human resources involved with IPR systems in those countries.

From July 13 to July 24, for the first time, the JPO conducted the IPR Training Course on Patent Examination for patent examiners from five Latin American Countries. This course is designed for patent examiners who engage in patent examination in specific technical fields. Considering the needs of the countries which the attendees came from, the JPO conducted a training course on information and communications technology, or ICT, which is one of the fields where a great number of applications from Japanese applicants have been filed with IP offices in such countries.

Fourteen trainees who attended the Course experienced patent examination practices, and conducted hands-on exercises in searching patent information by using the JPO’s service platform called the Advanced Industrial Property Network (AIPN)*. Also, they had discussions about differences in patent examination practices in their respective countries. They also visited the Examination Departments at the JPO and exchanged opinions on examination practices and examination standards with the examiners in charge of ICT. In addition, they visited a company to learn about intellectual property management in companies. The JPO has high expectations that the trainees will play important and active roles in their countries.

*Advanced Industrial Property Network (AIPN): A service platform that the JPO established in 2004, in order to enable IP offices around the world to obtain information on search results and examination information at the JPO.
