JPO Conducted IPR Training Course
on Substantive Examination of Design (Basic Program)

August 17, 2015

Under the aim of strengthening the protection of intellectual property rights (IPRs), the Japan Patent Office (JPO) has been inviting trainees from developing and emerging countries of the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, and Africa, and conducting training programs for them in Japan.

From July 23 to August 5, for the first time, the JPO conducted the IPR Training Course on Substantive Examination of Design (Basic Program). This course is designed for design examiners mainly from the ASEAN countries to enhance their professional capabilities for conducting examinations promptly and appropriately. Fifteen trainees attended the course and heard lectures on the laws and regulations related to designs in Japan, examination standards for design, and specialized expertise on examination practices, and conducted case studies involving design infringement lawsuits. Also, they visited the Design Examination Office at the JPO to learn the process for design examinations and the details about design classifications. In addition, by having an opportunity to visit a company, they also learned about intellectual property management in companies. The JPO has high expectations that the trainees will play important and active roles in their countries.
