African Ministerial Conference 2015 Held in Senegal

From November 3 to 5, “African Ministerial Conference 2015: Intellectual Property for an Emerging Africa,” sponsored by the Japan Funds-In-Trust for Industrial Property - Africa and LDCs, was held in a capital of Senegal, Dakar. This Conference was attended by the President of Mauritius, the Prime Minister of Senegal, other ministers and high-ranking officers from 48 nations in the African Region in order to discuss the role of intellectual property played in economic development. Mr. Kunihiko Shimano, Director-General of the Trial and Appeal Department of the JPO made a presentation on Japan’s IP policies, expectations and requests toward the African Region by the Japanese industries, and the JPO’s cooperation program for Africa to support the industries to advance their businesses in the African Region. He also expressed his wish that ministers and high-ranking officers who attended the Conference would make further efforts to improve their IP systems.

In addition, Director-General Shimano had an opportunity to exchange views with Dr. Francis Gurry, Director General of the WIPO, Mr. Fernando dos Santos, Director General of the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), Mr. Paulin Edou Edou, Director General of the Organisation africaine de la propriété intellectuelle (OAPI), and Mr. Sylvance Sange, Acting Managing Director of the Kenyan Intellectual Property Institute, regarding current status and issues of IP protection in the African Region, and the desirable future direction of cooperation program for Africa through Japan Funds-In-Trust for Industrial Property - Africa and LDCs.

※Japan Funds-In-Trust for Industrial Property - Africa and LDCs:
In 2008, the Government of Japan established the Funds-In-Trust arrangement on Industrial Property for Africa & Least Developed Countries (LDCs) with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) .
The Funds aim to raise awareness of and disseminate the IP systems, to develop human resources who will engage in the operation and use of the IP systems, to improve the IP systems, and to establish and strengthen the relevant agencies. This Conference was held as one of such activities.
