The Inaugural Industrial Design 5 Forum (ID5) Held

The inaugural Industrial Design 5 Forum (ID5) was held in Alexandria VA from December 3 to 4, 2015, attended by representatives from the Japan Patent Office (JPO), the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), the European Union’s Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) and the State Intellectual Property Office of the People’s Republic of China (SIPO), and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

At this inaugural Forum, these Five Offices, which account for approximately 90% of all industrial filings worldwide, acknowledged the necessity and importance of international cooperation in the field of industrial design, and agreed to establish a new industrial design framework known as ID5 to promote and advance mutual collaboration in the field of industrial design among the Five Offices.

Under this new framework, ID5, the Five Offices agreed to collect and organize statistical information on industrial design filings and first actions of each Office, and to organize and share information on industrial design classifications. Furthermore, the Five Offices considered on the development of ID5 website, the study of priority document exchange through the Digital Access Service (DAS), and the protection of emerging designs, such as animated designs, 3D images, graphical user interfaces (GUIs), etc.
