JPO Conducted IPR Training Course on Patent Examination Standards

January 15, 2016

Under the aim of strengthening the protection of intellectual property rights (IPRs), the Japan Patent Office (JPO) has been inviting trainees from developing and emerging countries of the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, and Africa, and conducting training programs for them in Japan.

The Training Course on Patent Examination Standards, conducted from January 8 to 15, is a brand new curriculum specifically designed for patent examiners who are mainly involved in revision of examination standards.

Twelve trainees, who attended the Course from different countries, studied Japan's patent examination standards that went through a comprehensive review and revision process last year. The trainees also had group discussion on the differences in judgement on patentability based on their respective examination standards. By comparing examination standards of each country, including Japan, they had a good opportunity to deepen their knowledge about similarities and differences of examination standards of each country. Through learning the structure of examination standards, trainees could enhance their abilities to think and make a right judgement, which is required for revising examination standards of their own country.
The JPO has high expectations that the trainees will play important and active roles in their countries.
