JPO Conducted IPR Training Course
on Patent Examination Practices for South Africa

February 17, 2016

Under the aim of strengthening the protection of intellectual property rights (IPRs), the Japan Patent Office (JPO) has been inviting trainees from developing and emerging countries of the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, and Africa, and conducting training programs for them in Japan.

The Training Course on Patent Examination Practices for South Africa, conducted from February 3 to 17, 2016, is a brand new curriculum, specifically designed for those who will engage in patent examination at the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) of Republic of South Africa when it will start patent substantive examination by themselves.

Ten trainees in the Course studied basic ideas of patent examination, and JPO’s examination guidelines including novelty and inventive step. They also learned through patent examination practices and patent information search practices. By learning a wide range of knowledge concerning patent examination practices, the trainees were able to enhance their skills and capabilities to act as patent examiners in the future. The JPO has high expectations that the trainees will play important and active roles in their countries.
