WIPO Deputy Director General Sandage Visited JPO

Mr. John Sandage, who is responsible for patent law and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT)at WIPO as the Deputy Director General (DDG), visited the JPO, and had meetings with both JPO Commissioner Ito and JPO Deputy Commissioner Koyanagi on March 24th.

During the meetings, Mr. Sandage mentioned that the number of international patent filings under the PCT is growing worldwide, and the number of filings from Japan increased by 4.4% in 2015. In addition, he reported how WIPO has improved the efficiency and effectiveness of business operations in its PCT Divisions. Also, he welcomed Japan’s accession to the Patent Law Treaty (PLT) and the Singapore Treaty on the Law of Trademarks (STLT).

Moreover, they discussed JPO’s activities regarding the international application system under the PCT and future development of the PCT system. The JPO and WIPO affirmed their commitment to further enhance cooperation in this area.
