JPO Joined Five Trademark Offices (TM5) Mid-Term Meeting

July 20, 2016

On July 19, the Five Trademark Offices (TM5) Mid-Term Meeting (consisting of IP offices from Japan, the United States, Europe, China, and Korea) was held in Beijing, China.

At the Meeting, reports were presented from each lead office concerning the state of progress of various cooperative projects and proposals were made regarding how to proceed with the projects in the future. Regarding the JPO-led “Continuation/Expansion of Bad Faith Project*,” it was confirmed that TM5 Offices would work together to create a “Case Examples on Bad-Faith Trademark Filings” by March 2017. Regarding the JPO and EUIPO-led “User Association Involvement Project,” a new proposal was made to hold joint workshops in corporation with user organizations, and other Offices agreed with it.

Also, a user session targeting representative users from industry groups or patent attorney organizations was held at the Meeting, where each office reported on the current status of TM5 projects and a Q&A session was conducted.

Next, TM5 Offices will convene at the fifth TM5 Annual Meeting to be held in China this fall.

* This project aims to exchange information on laws/regulations and operational practices at each Office regarding bad faith trademark filings, as well as to provide users with such information.
