July 20, 2016

On July 19, the 6th Japan-ASEAN Heads of Intellectual Property Offices Meeting was held in Bali, Indonesia. At the Meeting, the Heads of JPO and the ASEAN IP Offices formulated the cooperation program on IP issues for fiscal year 2016 that includes the support of updating or drafting patent manual (examination guidelines). In addition, they confirmed that the JPO would continue to contribute to building IP system infrastructure in each country, taking into account issues to be newly addressed respectively, while continuously strengthening its support to the ASEAN IP Offices on such activities as their human resource development and their accession to the international treaties.

Along with the main Meeting, JPO Commissioner Komiya had bilateral talks with the Heads of the IP Offices of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Singapore, confirming that the JPO would enhance the bilateral cooperative relation with each country according to the developing situations of the IP system and the status of its operation in each country, as well as issues to be addressed respectively.

Specifically, the JPO agreed to exchange patent information data including patent gazette with Indonesia, while signing a Record of Discussion with Myanmar regarding cooperative activities to be conducted for this fiscal year.

In addition, the IP Forum under the theme of national IP strategies was held in Jakarta, Indonesia. JPO Commissioner Komiya delivered his opening remarks in front of more than 300 audiences, introducing Japan’s national IP strategies.

The JPO will continue to promote its IP-related cooperation in a comprehensive manner across the ASEAN region so that intellectual property rights may be protected properly in each of the ASEAN countries, while trying to understand the needs of users such as Japanese corporations, and deepening the dialogue with ASEAN countries and their IP Offices.
