In order to support developing countries with the development of human resources who engage in the industrial property rights system, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) has been inviting trainees from developing and emerging countries of the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, Africa, and other regions, to provide training programs for them in Japan.

From November 8 to 21, the JPO conducted the IPR Training Course on the Substantive Examination of Design, targeting at design examiners from the countries where substantive examination is conducted in design examination.

In the Course, a total of 18 design examiners attended and learned design examination practices through lectures and hands-on exercises on the JPO's Examination Guidelines for Design and its examination practices as well as case studies on design infringement lawsuits.

The JPO has high expectations that the trainees will play important and active roles in the enhancement of design examination capabilities in their home countries.
