JPO Conducted Training Program
on the Substantive Examination of Trademarks

November 30, 2016

In order to support developing countries with the development of human resources who engage in the industrial property rights system, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) has been inviting trainees from developing and emerging countries of the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, Africa, and other regions, to provide training programs for them in Japan.

From November 17 to 30, the JPO conducted the IPR Training Course on the Substantive Examination of Trademarks, targeting for trademark examiners.

A total of 8 trademark examiners attended this Course, and received the lectures on judgement as to similarity of trademarks/ goods and services, non-traditional trademarks such as color trademarks and sound trademarks, quality management, and so on. In addition, trainees had an opportunity to learn practical aspects of trademark examinations through the on-the-job training by JPO staff, and case studies using actual cases.

The JPO has high expectations that the trainees would play important and active roles in the enhancement of trademark examination capabilities in their home countries.
