JPO Conducted Operational Patent Examination Training Program

November 1, 2017

Under the aim of strengthening the protection of intellectual property rights in order to support developing countries with the development of human resources who engage in the industrial property rights system, the Japan Patent Office(JPO) has been inviting trainees from developing and emerging countries of the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, and Africa, and conducting training programs for them in Japan.

From September 12 to November 1, the JPO conducted the Operational Examination Training Program, aiming to enhance examination skills of patent examiners, and 10 patent examiners from 4 countries in charge of examinations in the fields of electricity or chemicals attended the program.
In the program, the JPO conducted lectures for the trainees pertaining to patent examination practices on how to read descriptions, prior art searches, patentability judgements, etc. in accordance with the flow of patent examination.
Furthermore, they deepened their knowledge on practices in preparation of International Search Report (ISR) as an International Searching Authority (ISA).

The JPO has high expectations that the trainees will play important and active roles in their countries.
