The 6th TM5 Annual Meeting was Held

On November 30 and December 1, 2017 the Five Trademark Offices (TM5) Annual Meeting was held in Alicante, Spain. (The five offices are from China, Europe, Korea, Japan, and the United States.)

Progress reports on 13 cooperative projects were given at the meeting. As examples, some of the projects were the “Bad Faith Trademark Project *1” and the “Image Search Project*2” led by the Japan Patent Office (JPO), and the “User Association Involvement Project*3” co-led by the JPO and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). In addition, the lead offices made proposals on how their respective projects should be advanced, inducing active discussions.

Also, the TM5 Offices agreed to advance further cooperation on three new projects such as the “Quality Management Project*4”, which was co-proposed by the JPO and the EUIPO.

Furthermore, on December 1, user sessions were held on Bad Faith Trademarks, Quality Management for Examinations, and other topics, which catered to representatives of users from industry groups and patent attorney organizations. The TM5 Offices and representatives attending had very lively discussions afterward.

In addition, the TM5 Offices agreed that the 7th TM5 Annual Meeting will be hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO).

  • *1 The “Bad Faith Trademark Project” is to exchange information on laws, regulations and operational practices at each Office regarding bad faith trademark filings, as well as to provide users with such information.
  • *2 The “Image Search Project” is to define issues and possible solutions for the development and implementation of a figurative search system. Also, it aims at creating and sharing outcomes of the project among the Offices, so that each Office can and will be able to make effective use of them as reference now and in the future when individually introducing an image search system.
  • *3 The “User Association Involvement Project” is to establish coherent and consistent involvement with user associations in the TM5 projects, and to hold workshops to communicate with general users.
  • *4 The “Quality Management Project” is to collect and share Information on the initiatives and practices implemented in order to improve the quality of implementation systems of trademark examination, as well as examinations conducted by the TM5 Offices.
