9th Japan-China-Korea Design Forum Held - Theme: Management Strategies Focusing on the Utilization of Designs and the Future of the Design System -

On May 24, 2018, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) held the 9th Japan-China-Korea Design Forum. (*1)

Before the Forum was held, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan; and the JPO, released a report (*2) made by the Study Group on Industrial Competitiveness and Designs, which highlights the importance of management strategies focusing on the utilization of designs. The report is designed to enable users to make more strategic commercial use of their designs. The report emphasizes that, in order to strengthen companies’ competitive advantages, the strategic use of designs is essential because designs, as important management resources, advance innovations and establish brands.

Based on this, the JPO invited various individuals to attend this year’s Japan-China-Korea Design Forum, such as executive managers working at global companies and senior members in charge of designs at the governments in Japan, China, and Korea. The invites delivered lectures and participated in panel discussions. Their companies are famous for making effective use of their excellent designs as core management resources. The forum program included lectures and panel discussions specifically focusing on how companies are implementing management strategies that are founded on making strategic use of designs, and how the design system can be more strategically used.

In addition, Ms. Munakata, JPO Commissioner, emphasized in her opening remarks the importance of sustainable, corporate management focusing on the utilization of designs and the necessity of revising the Design Act of Japan, which are issues stated in the above mentioned report. (*3)
