Profile of the Republic of the Philippines
The Republic of the Philippines is located in Southeast Asia in the Pacific Ocean. It has an area of approximately 299,404 km2 (80% of that of Japan) and 7,109 islands. The population is 76.5 million (based on a census taken in May 2000), most of whom are Malayans. There are also Chinese, Spanish and people of mixed blood (Malayans as well as other ethnic minorities). Filipino is the national language, and Filipino and English are the official languages. There are approximately 80 other languages. 83% of the nationals are Catholic, 10% belong to other Christian sects, and 5% are Islamic. The capital city is Manila. |

| The JPO has provided instructions and advice on automation in the patent administrative processing system in the Philippines through dispatched experts under the JICA project-type technical cooperation. |

Modernization of Industrial Property Administration Project
The JPO carried out the “Modernization of Industrial Property Administration Project” (JICA the project-type technical cooperation) over a period of four years from May 1999 to May 2003 to develop human resources for computerization of the administrative processing system for patents, utility models, and designs and the effective operation of such a system in the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPO).

While establishing an administrative processing system in the IPO, the JPO transferred the technology necessary for the modernization of the administrative processing system for industrial property rights. The administrative processing system which was established contains two databases, the bibliographical database (for code data) and the document database (for image data), stored information on applications, registrations and publications for patent, utility model and design so that the IPO can achieve effective and efficient administrative processing by making use of the stored information. |
