Joint Seminar Held in Thailand

On November 6 and 7, 2013, the Japan Institute for Promoting Invention and Innovation (JIPII) held a joint seminar in Bangkok, Thailand for the first time. This seminar was held as a part of the JPO-commissioned project "Cooperation in Human Resource Development." We had until this point been offering short training programs, etc. during this project, mostly to trainees from China, India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam. We arranged this seminar as an opportunity to invite representatives from the alumni associations (groups consisting of former trainees) from each of these countries, as well as representatives from related organizations, to Thailand. During the seminar, the representatives of Thailand, Japan, and the other aforementioned countries gave lectures on the topic "Success of Intellectual Property Management among Asian Emerging Countries" (closed workshops on the first day and open lectures on the second day). This 11th seminar held in Thailand was the first joint seminar to which representatives from all of these countries were invited?and the first after a two-year hiatus.

The seminar was hosted by the Japan Patent Office (JPO) and the Department of Intellectual Property of Thailand (DIP), and was managed by JIPII and the Intellectual Property Promotion Association of Thailand (IPPAT), Thailand’s alumni association. On the first day of the seminar, the 20 attendees (including those from Japan) participated in workshops based on their presentations about achievements made in their respective countries, focusing on the activities of the alumni associations. The second day offered open lectures for all 121 attendees, including alumni in Thailand. The attendees were mainly people working for companies, universities, research institutions, law firms, or other organizations in IP-related fields, as well as some government officials.

The presentations included two given by lecturers from Japan. Mr. Kunihisa Ito, Director, International Cooperation Division, Japan Patent Office (JPO), gave a lecture entitled "Japan's Efforts in Promoting Intellectual Property Policies," and Mr. Takao Ogiya, Director General, Asia-Pacific Industrial Property Center, Japan Institute for Promoting Invention and Innovation (APIC-JIPII), gave a lecture entitled "The Current Status and Future Direction of IPRs in Japan." In addition, representatives of alumni associations, etc. from the aforementioned countries gave lectures entitled "Essence of R&D Institutes on Leveraging Nation's Invention," "Asian Countries' Coordination on Protection of IPRs," "Support of the Philippine Government on the Management of Commercialization of Intellectual Property," and "Effective Role of Law Enforcement on IPRs Management." The attendees asked many questions about issues such as the differences between the IP systems of various countries, and governmental measures to develop IP awareness. These questions indicated the strong interest of Thailand's IP experts in promoting global business operations and IP activities.

A meeting was held for alumni in Thailand on the following day, November 8.
