Follow-up Seminar (India)

A follow-up seminar was held in Delhi, India on October 6, 2014. The seminar was part of a project undertaken by the Japan Institute for Promoting Invention and Innovation (JIPII) on consignment from the Japan Patent Office (JPO) to promote development of human resources who will work for the protection of intellectual property rights involving Japanese companies operating overseas. This marked the seventh time that a seminar has been held in India under the project. It was last held in India in 2012.

The seminar was held by the JIPII under the sponsorship of the JPO and the Indian IP Alumni Association (INIPAA). A special greeting was given for the seminar by Dr. K.S. Kardam, Senior Joint Controller of Patents & Designs of the Patent Office, Controller General of Patents Designs and Trademarks (CGPDTM) of the Indian Government. The seminar was attended by about 70 people, including patent attorneys, lawyers and other employees at law firms, as well as experts on intellectual property rights employed by companies. Government officials in charge of intellectual property rights and officials in charge of the field working for Japanese companies operating in India also participated in the seminar.

From the Japanese side, Mr. Junichi Nagumo, Assistant Director of the International Cooperation Division in the Policy Planning and Coordination Department of the JPO, delivered a special speech under the title "Japan's Efforts in Promoting Intellectual Property (IP) Policies." Mr. Hirohiko Usui, Project Director of the Intellectual Property Division of Denso Corporation, and Mr. Takao Ogiya, Director General of the Asia-Pacific Industrial Property Center of the JIPII, also delivered speeches. Mr. Usui spoke on the topic titled "Adequate Protection of IPR to Promote Foreign Investment: Japanese Investors' Perspective." Mr. Ogiya spoke on the topic titled "Experiences of Strategic Utilization of IPR for Economic Revitalization in Japan." The Indian speakers were Mr. D.P.S. Parmar, Technical Member of the Intellectual Property Appellate Board in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and Arun C. Mohan, President of the INIPAA. Mr. Parmar spoke on the topic titled "IPR Protection in India – Current Status and Issues." Mr. Mohan spoke on the topic titled "IPR Utilization for Economic Development." A lively question-and-answer session was held during a break and after the speeches. Participants interacted actively with the lecturers, reflecting their enthusiasm to gain new knowledge and build personal networks.
