The JPO held a seminar in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, on January 24th. The theme of the seminar was “Promoting IP Management for Research Collaboration between Universities and Industries.” There were approximately 80 attendees in total, including IP related persons from the Ministry of Education (MOE), private companies, law offices, universities and research institutes, among which were former participants of the JPO training courses held in Japan.

The seminar began with a keynote speech given by Dr. Moe Moe Thwe, Deputy Director General, Department of Research and Innovation, MOE, on the current status of IP policy in Myanmar. The JPO then followed with an introduction to the seminar by explaining current trends in industrial property rights administration in Japan. IP experts from university and the private sector explained IP management in universities related to cooperative research and the improvement of the system and human resource development in order to promote research collaboration between universities and industry. The lecturers from Myanmar gave presentations on IP management in universities and SMEs, and SME policies and strategies of the Myanmarese government.

A question and answer session was held following each session, and there were active opinion exchanges between the lecturers and attendees.

On January 25th, the JPO held a meeting with former trainees to hear their opinions and gather useful information that will help us in planning future training programs. The JPO look forward to the further success of former trainees, as well as all IP-related professionals, in Myanmar.
