Report on the “JPO/IPR Training Course for Patent Experts”

The JPO/IPR Training Course for Patent Experts was successfully completed in mid- September, having run from the end of August during the period of lingering summer heat. The course was attended by 19 trainees whose home countries were Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

After attending lectures for two days at the Overseas Human Resources and Industry Development Association (HIDA), the trainees participated in a training course at the Asia-Pacific Industrial Property Center (APIC). On the first day of the course, they visited the Japan Patent Office (JPO) to pay a courtesy call to the executives of JPO. An additional six trainees participated in the Patent Practical and Tailored Training Program (PPTT) that began on the same day.

On September 7th, the trainees visited Fujitsu Limited in Kawasaki City with the PPTT trainees and long-term trainees. They observed an exhibition room in a laboratory adjacent to the head office, and received hands-on experience in advanced technologies. Subsequently, they attended lectures concerning intellectual property management at the head office of Fujitsu Limited. Since the trainees visited only one company this time, this was an important opportunity for them to enjoy a day trip by train.

Many trainees asked questions and actively participated in the discussions that followed the daily lectures. When they were divided into several groups, numerous trainees showed leadership in their respective groups, enlivening the training course all the more.

The trainees also enjoyed a good reputation among the lecturers, who said that they were the best group that had ever participated in the course thus far, as shown by the way they asked many good questions based on their understanding of each lecture.

As a whole, the training course was evaluated very highly by the trainees, in terms of goal achievement and other factors. The course also seemed to improve trainees’ skills, with many indicating that they would be able to apply the results to their work. Some trainees also stated that they wished to participate in another training course soon.

We are looking forward to their future success!
