Report on the “JPO/IPR Training Course for IP Protection Lawyers”

Once again, our IP activities have created cross-border "IP Friends." This year, 15 people from seven countries (Brazil, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam) participated in the JPO/IPR Training Course for IP Protection Lawyers. Attendants included patent attorneys at private businesses or law offices, court judges, and others in charge of "IP protection and infringement handling."

At the start, participants happily greeted each other with a "Nice to meet you!," and then attended the first lecture, "Outline of Japanese Intellectual Property Rights," presented by Mr. Ogose, with smiles on their faces.

On the second day, trainees presented a report on pre-training. Mr. Kumagai, who also served as a mentor at this training course, provided advice on each trainee’s presentation, helping them to understand each other's backgrounds.

On the third day, the Japan Patent Office presented a lecture on an outline of the Japanese patent system, and also organized a JPO tour. After listening to the lecture in the morning, trainees took the JPO tour in the afternoon, visiting various locations, including the trial court, National Center for Industrial Property Information and Training, and the application desk, listening to explanations on Japan’s ten greatest inventors, etc.

On the fourth day, lectures on an outline of the Japanese patent, design, and trademark system started. For the duration of the 3-day training, trainees divided into a “patent group” and a “trademark group” and engaged in respective case studies. This was the first year that this curriculum had been implemented.

Many of the lectures adopted a "trainee participation" approach, in which the basic explanation was followed by exercises, and discussions on each trainee's opinion. Trainees regarded this style as highly effective in that they could deepen their understanding and at the same time learn about cases from other countries.

As extra lessons, trainees visited Fuji Xerox, the Yuasa and Hara law firm, and the Intellectual Property High Court.

On the Fuji Xerox facility tour, a number of employees welcomed the trainees in a very hospitable manner, with different personnel attending to each of the trainee groups by country.

At the Yuasa and Hara law firm, staff members explained international trends regarding intellectual property, and then gave sincere answers to all the questions raised by the trainees.

At the Intellectual Property High Court, trainees sat in on an actual trial and listened to the judge's explanation of the proceedings. It was clear that all of the trainees could deepen their understanding on intellectual property protection and infringement handling through directly visiting a Japanese company, a law firm, and the court.

In every lecture the trainees had a very forward-looking attitude, showing respect not only for the lecturers but also for the other trainees. They were all very interesting people. I can't help but think how lucky I was to have been able to look after them.

It was a three-day weekend, so they also all seemed to have been able to enjoy sightseeing in Japan.

They have all won gold medals as trainees! I am looking forward to watching their progress in the future.
