The 4th Joint Experts Group for Trial and Appeal (JEGTA) and the 2nd Administrative Judge Exchange Program were held among the Japan Patent Office (JPO), the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) and the State Intellectual Property Office of the People’s Republic of China (SIPO) on September 5 and 6, 2016 at the JPO in Tokyo. The Meetings were attended by Mr. Kunihiko Shimano, Director-General of the Trial and Appeal Department of the JPO with his colleagues, Ms. Jiang Tong, Deputy Director-General of the Patent Reexamination Board (PRB) of the SIPO with her colleagues, and Mr. Ryu Donghyun, Director of Trial Policy Division of the KIPO. At these Meetings, administrative judges from the Three Offices (JPO, KIPO and SIPO) discussed and exchanged opinions regarding comparative study on trials for invalidation among these countries as well as issues on practices using the actual cases through the exchange program. In addition, they exchanged information on statistics and agreed on how to proceed with the Administrative Judge Exchange Programs in the future. Overall, the Meetings were fruitful.

The JPO will continue to actively foster various exchange programs with other Offices in the field of trials and appeals, endeavoring to improve transparency in the dispute resolution system across the world.
