Walking among Modernity and TraditionMr. Pedro Sloboda Jorge (Brazil)(FY 2017 JPO/IPR Training Course on Trademark Examination Practices (Basic Program),6 February ? 16 February, 2018)On a February afternoon, as the plane took off from the Rio de Janeiro International Airport, I left theblazing hot Brazilian summer for a 30-hour journey that would land me literally on the other side of theplanet, in the cold and giant Tokyo. I was there for the JPO/IPR Training Course on Trademark ExaminationPractices (Basic Program) along with other 15 trademark examiners from eight South American and Asiancountries. It seemed to be a great opportunity to learn more about the Japanese Trademark System and the practicesof a huge and internationally respected Patent and Trademark Office like the JPO. My expectationswere not only met but exceeded, as the course proved to be also an excellent way to be in touch with colleaguesfrom other countries and learn more about their experiences, challenges and strategies. However, what was to have been just a study trip showed an unexpected and positive side effect: it wasthe chance to visit a country?and especially a city?that I only knew through television shows, movies andhistory classes. More than that, it was an opportunity to get a glimpse of the Japanese people and its richcultural heritage, and I was eager to make the most of it.Tokyo SkytreeIP Friends Connections August 2018 No.19ENISHI15
