JPO Holds Policy Dialogue with Three African IP Offices for the First Time

September 12, 2019

On August 29, 2019 the Japan Patent Office (JPO) held for the first time a policy dialogue with three African IP offices for the purpose of advancing cooperative initiatives with them in the IP field. This dialogue was held during the seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TCAD7), which was held from August 27th to 30th in Yokohama. The Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI), the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC), South Africa, and the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI) participated in the dialogue.

The three African IP Offices agreed to the JPO’s proposal for strengthening comprehensive cooperation among them for developing their IP infrastructures.

In addition, the JPO jointly organized some official side events of the TICAD7 to inform the current state of IP and the JPO’s cooperative initiatives in Africa. A panel discussion with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and a seminar with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) were held and a booth was set up by the JPO, WIPO and JETRO.
