JPO Hosted a Special Session at the Singapore IP Week

August 28, 2020

On August 26, 2020, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) hosted a session in collaboration with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) at the annual Intellectual Property event (IP Week) organized by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS). In recent years, IP Week gathers participants from over 40 countries. This year, the event was held online for the first time. The JPO has been hosting a special session at the event to share the knowledge of Japanese and foreign IP personnel since 2016.

The session this year was titled “Avoiding Pitfalls in Startup Growth: An IP Perspective,” focusing on the importance of IP perspective in startup growth. After the opening speech delivered by JPO Deputy Commissioner Iwasaki, a member of the Startup Support Section introduced findings identified in a survey on the possible pitfalls in startup growth that venture capitalists and incubators might encounter*, seen from an IP perspective. The panel discussion was held based on the JPO survey, and the participants, including those who are involved in IP and start-up nurturing organizations and investors from Japan and Singapore, discussed the possible pitfalls the startup ecosystem in Singapore might encounter and how players can use an IP perspective to avoid them.

This session is expected to help startups to recognize the role of intellectual property in nurturing their business and to facilitate their business development at home and abroad.
