JPO Commissioner Delivered a Keynote Speech at the Singapore IP Week

August 28, 2020

On August 26, 2020, the annual Intellectual Property event (IP Week) hosted by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) was held, and Mr. Kasutani, Commissioner of the Japan Patent Office (JPO), delivered a keynote speech on "Accelerating Innovation, Recovery and Growth in the COVID-19 Era." In recent years, IP Week gathers participants from over 40 countries and serves as a forum for the global IP community to interact. This year, the event was held online for the first time.

In his speech, Commissioner Kasutani pointed out that the impact of COVID-19 will result in the acceleration of digitalization and presented JPO's initiatives to support the promotion of innovation. Examples of the JPO initiatives included the release of the world's first Examination Handbook on AI/IoT-related technologies and the shortening of FA pendency for patent examination down to ten months on average. The implementation of the Super-accelerated Examination System for startups that expedites the examination process to within one month at no extra charge was also introduced as another example.

We hope that communicating the JPO's initiatives to the rest of the world will help spread similar efforts globally and accelerate innovation at home and abroad.
