Director-General delivered a speech via video message at the WIPO event

November 27, 2020

The Virtual Regional Meeting on Developing the ARIPO Regional TISC Network was held for three days on November 23, 25, and 26, 2020, in the form of a video conference. At this meeting, Mr. Yasuda, the Director-General of the Patent Examination Department of the Japan Patent Office (JPO), delivered a speech via video message.

With regard to the Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC), which was established to improve access to information on IP in developing countries, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has launched a feasibility study on training of staff members since 2019.

At the meeting, officials in charge of TISC from ARIPO and its member states as well as staff members of WIPO exchanged views based on the results of the feasibility study.

In his speech, Director-General Yasuda mentioned that it is important for IP offices and TISC to take the initiative as organizations to promote innovation, and that TISC greatly contributes to sustainable development of each country utilizing IP rights. In addition, he also announced that the JPO will continue to maintain and further develop close cooperative relationships with ARIPO and its member states, and promote the continued cooperation necessary to enable sustainable growth throughout the entire African continent. Mr. Fernando Dos Santos, Director General of ARIPO, who was present at the meeting, expressed his gratitude to Director-General Yasuda for his message.

The Japanese government has been making voluntary contributions to WIPO since 1987 (WIPO Japan Funds-in-Trust), which has been implementing a number of initiatives, such as training staff assigned to TISC. This year's meeting was held with the support of the JPO.

By enhancing the usability of information service provided from TISC, we expect to promote sustainable economic development through the use of IP in developing countries. And also, by improving the IP environment in developing countries, we aim to contribute to the expansion of companies into such countries.
