JPO exchanged opinions with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for strengthening the cooperative relationship in the field of industrial designs

On November 15, 2017, Mr. Sawai, Director-General, Patent and Design Examination Department of the Japan Patent Office(JPO) visited the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in Alexandria, USA, and exchanged opinions on strengthening the cooperative relationship in the field of industrial designs in both Offices with Mr. Hirshfeld, Commissioner for Patents of the USPTO.

In this meeting, both Offices confirmed the significance brought from international protection of industrial designs by accidence to the international application and registration system for designs(Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement) contemporaneously (in May 2015) and also agreed to advance to mutual understanding and strengthen the close partnership, mainly substantive examination practices of industrial designs, such as establishing JPO-USPTO Designs Examiners’ Meeting on a regular basis, strengthening cooperative activities in the ID5 framework, accelerating the cooperative work on a JP-US common design classification, toward the realization of more reliably and smoothly protection for industrial designs.

The JPO will continue to make efforts in international cooperation in the field of industrial design including utilization of ID5 Meetings and improve the Intellectual property environment that will enable intellectual property rights of Japanese companies to be quickly and smoothly obtained and properly protected.
