Main content starts here.
As of July 1, 2025, I have assumed the position of Commissioner at the Japan Patent Office (JPO).
Japan’s economy now stands at a crossroads, facing the critical question of whether it can successfully shift to a growth-oriented model driven by wage increases and capital investment.
To realize this transition, it is essential to further strengthen our capacity for innovation. The JPO is responsible for protecting and promoting the utilization of industrial property, which serves as the driving force behind innovation. I am deeply aware of the weight that this responsibility carries.
Together with the cooperation of relevant institutions, organizations and experts, I will do my utmost to implement effective policies and measures aimed at enhancing our nation’s earning power.
In recent years, the pace of digital transformation (DX) has accelerated dramatically, while cross-border services have also increased and business activities in virtual spaces have expanded. In addition, the rapid development of generative AI is bringing about significant changes to the environment for creative activities. In response to these changes, the JPO began convening a panel of experts last year to discuss the future of the industrial property rights system. We will examine each issue head-on, and if institutional measures are required, we will respond appropriately including by implementing legislative reforms if necessary.
Meanwhile, the JPO will participate in the Expo 2025, Osaka, Kansai, Japan, from October 2 to 10. Herein, we will aim to showcase the appeal of intellectual property (IP) to the public, especially young people. To spark interest in the world of IP and convey the message that IP can be a powerful tool for solving social issues, we are planning exhibitions featuring leading IP-driven businesses, as well as hands-on experiences with products utilizing patented technologies. In addition, the JPO will host a series of sessions during an international forums to be held on October 4. On this occasion, we will invite the Director General of WIPO, and the heads of IP offices from various countries, to discuss promoting the use of IP toward achieving the SDGs. Herein, we will place a special focus on WIPO Green, as well as women and youth. We would be delighted if you visit the JPO’s exhibition at the Expo and observe these international forum sessions, whether in person or online.
We will continue to work toward strengthening the earning power of Japanese enterprises and other entities through these multi-faceted efforts in the area of industrial property administration.
In closing, I would like to ask for your ongoing understanding and support for our administration. Thank you very much, and I wish you all continued good health and happiness.
KASAI Yasuyuki,
JPO Commissioner
