From May 13 to 18, the Casablanca IP Week was celebrated in Casablanca, the Kingdom of Morocco marking the 100th anniversary of the Morocco’s IP system, co-hosted by the Ministry of Industry, Trade, Investment and Digital Economy and Moroccan Industrial and Commercial Property Office (OMPIC), aiming at disseminating and raising awareness of intellectual property in Morocco. Taking advantage of this opportunity, the JPO conducted a seminar on enforcement of intellectual property rights utilizing the WIPO/Japan Funds-in-Trust for Africa & LDCs. The details are described below.

Overview:
In addition to invited customs officers from ten African countries, including Kennya and Egypt, approximately 50 people working in the relevant fields in Morocco participated in the seminar. Speakers at the seminar were from JPO, Tokyo Customs and private sector in Japan, as well as WIPO, World Customs Organization (WCO) and Morocco government officials including Morocco Customs.
At the seminar, speakers introduced their counterfeit measures and talked about their respective experiences related to the topic, along with exchanging opinions with each other. At the round-table session, participants provided a lot of comments and questions, among which the JPO received comments, saying that they acknowledged the importance of disseminating and raising awareness of intellectual property among consumers in their own countries, or that they had a great expectation for the role of the WIPO/Japan Funds-in-Trust for Africa & LDCs.
Furthermore, at the Customs in Casablanca International Airport, practices of how to uncover counterfeit products at the border was explained based on actual cases. Subsequently, opinions were exchanged regarding the differences in practices a mong countries.
