JPO Held Second TM5 Seminar on Bad-faith Trademark Filings

On May 13, 2014, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) held the Second TM5 Seminar on Bad-faith Trademark Filings at the 136th International Trademark Association (INTA) Annual Meeting in Hong Kong.

This Seminar was held as a part of the activities of the Continuation/Expansion of Bad Faith Project which the JPO has been actively advancing as the lead office under the cooperative framework of the TM5, including the intellectual property (IP) offices of Japan, the U.S., Europe, China, and Korea. The First Seminar was held in Tokyo in October 2013.

At the Second Seminar, the JPO conducted a panel discussion about legal systems and operational practices of the TM5 offices in dealing with bad faith trademark filings. Fortunately, the panel discussion was very successful, with approximately 200 users attending, including company employees and lawyers from a variety of countries.

Also, the JPO, as the lead office of the Project, is now preparing a report by compiling information on systems and operational practices of the TM5 offices in dealing with bad faith trademark filings. This report is planned to be uploaded on the JPO website as well as on the TM5 website (http://tmfive.org/main.php) that was launched this May, in order to provide information to users.

Going forward, the JPO continues to exchange information on systems and operational practices of the TM5 offices as well as to provide a variety of useful information to users.
