WIPO External Offices

WIPO has external offices in seven countries worldwide, liaising with local organizations, promoting IP awareness, and disseminating WIPO’s services, tools, and platforms. WIPO also provides capacity building and technical assistance based on the needs of the area-of-responsibility.

The JPO collaborates with the WIPO Japan Office in various aspects. Some examples are provided below.

Support users of international patent / design / trademark system

In order to effectively utilize industrial property rights such as patents, designs, and trademarks, securing the rights in the country or region where the business is conducted is indispensable. The international patent / design / trademark system under the jurisdiction of WIPO makes it easier to obtain rights in foreign countries.

The JPO, jointly with the WIPO Japan Office, has been working to disseminate these systems in Japan. Specifically, the JPO, in cooperation with the WIPO Japan Office, offers explanations on these systems based on the latest information at seminars on the IP system for users. In addition, in collaboration with the WIPO Japan Office, the JPO aims to disseminate this system by responding to inquiries in Japanese and listening to the needs of individual companies.

Assistance to Developing Countries

The IP system in Japan has a long history and experiences of Japan can be beneficial to developing countries.

The JPO has continued making voluntary contributions to WIPO since 1987 and has established a trust fund, Funds-in-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT Japan IP Global), based on these contributions.

Over the 35 years since FIT Japan IP Global was established, it has contributed a total amount of approximately 95 million CHF and provided assistance to more than 100 countries.

Through FIT Japan IP Global, the JPO supports the activities of the WIPO Japan Office, such as providing information to developing countries through IP Advantage database(External link、PDF) (a database of IP Case Studies), and fostering capacity building in developing countries in the IP field through workshops. Along with this, the JPO also cooperates in the design of training programs.
