On 29 April 2021, the Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2021 Spring Imperial Decorations. Dr. Francis Gurry, the former Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), is among this year’s foreign recipients. He received the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun in acknowledgement of his contributions to strengthening the partnership between Japan and WIPO in the field of intellectual property (IP).
Dr. Gurry served as Director General of WIPO from October 2008 to September 2020. During his tenure, he made it easy to obtain and utilize IP rights in Japan by improving international IP systems continuously.
He also contributed to raising public awareness of protection of IP through public lectures on the importance of IP. He promoted assistance to developing countries in cooperation with Japan and contributed to further improving Japan’s international presence in the field of IP.
On 22 July, a ceremony was held at the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Geneva for the conferment of the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun on Dr. Francis Gurry, the former Director General of the WIPO.
