The Japan Patent Office (JPO) has been making voluntary contributions to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) since 1987. Based on these contributions, as part of supports for African countries in the field of industrial property rights, the JPO has been providing cooperation since 2008 to the Master’s Degree in Intellectual Property (MIP) program which run by the WIPO in collaboration with the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) and the Africa University. This cooperation includes providing scholarships every year to about 12 trainees participating in the program.
On June 3, 2021, Mr. Yasuda, Director-General of the Patent and Design Examination Department of the JPO, congratulated the graduating trainees with a video message at the opening session of the MIP program’s graduation event.
In his speech, the Director-General emphasized that "human resources" are of the utmost importance in economic development utilizing IP. In addition, he expressed his hope that graduates from the MIP program play an active role as international business key persons.
In the panel discussion, experts who are graduates from the MIP program and currently active in the IP field, and experts who are active in Japan took the stage and shared their experiences with the graduating trainees.
