Japan Session at IP Week: Discussing How IP Can Be Used to Protect Our Natural Environment

On August 27, 2021, the Japan Patent Office (JPO), in collaboration with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), hosted a Japan session online during the annual intellectual property event called IP Week, which is organized by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS). In recent years, individuals from over 40 countries have been attending the IP Week activities. The JPO has been hosting a Japan session since 2016, sharing information with both Japanese and non-Japanese persons involved in the IP field.
The Japan session this year was titled "IP-Driven Development of "Green Niche": To be a Trendy Entrepreneur for Green Investors." This session was an opportunity for attendees to share their knowledge and experience in using intellectual property to protect our natural environment.

The opening remarks were delivered by JPO Deputy Commissioner Iwasaki, who emphasized the importance of the IP ecosystem in the field of the natural environment. After that, a panel discussion was held, with an engineer from a Japanese company, an investment fund manager, an associate professor from Brunei University, and a consultant from a startup development organization in Singapore, having an lively discussion on (1) how to utilize WIPO GREEN, (2) the value of environmentally friendly technologies in the ASEAN region from the perspective of investors and technology-transfer organizations, and (3) how to research environmentally friendly technologies by making use of IP.

Going forward, the JPO remains committed to supporting the establishment of IP ecosystems and promoting innovation.
