Since 1996, for more than 25 years, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) has been conducting cooperative initiatives with India in the field of intellectual property (IP), such as conducting training programs for members of the Indian government. Also, since 2017, the JPO and the Indian government have been holding JPO-DPIIT Review Meetings* as another means to strengthen the cooperative relationship between the Indian government and Japan.
As part of the ongoing cooperative initiatives between Japan and India, the JPO, in cooperation with the Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM) of India, held a seminar online on August 31st, 2021, to raise awareness on IP. The seminar, which was designed for startups, was titled the “Importance of IP for Startups and the Value of Information on IP.”
At the seminar, the JPO and the CIPAM explained about: (1) the significant role IP plays in developing businesses of startups; and (2) how to make effective use of published information on IP. Also, IP experts from both Japan and India were invited, and they kindly delivered speeches on cases showing how startups utilized IP to grow their business activities.
Going forward, the JPO, in cooperation with the Indian government, is committed to strengthening the cooperative relationship between Japan and India by creating a framework in which IP can be appropriately protected and effectively used in our two countries.
* Annually since 2017, the JPO, together with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), and the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (CGPDTM) of India, have held joint JPO-DPIIT Review Meetings that are aimed to continue advancing and strengthening the cooperative relationship between Japan and India in the field of IP.
