WIPO Assemblies 2021 Convened

October 6, 2021

The 62nd series of meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) convened in Geneva, Switzerland beginning on October 4, 2021. As with last year, the meetings are being held in the same hybrid format that combines physical participation at the conference hall and virtual participation through online platforms and video images. The delegation of Japan is participating both physically and virtually.

During the opening session, a General Statement video1 delivered by Mr. Mori Kiyoshi, Commissioner of the Japan Patent Office (JPO), was broadcast on behalf of Japan. In his statement, Commissioner Mori indicated that WIPO’s Medium-Term Strategic Plan (MTSP), which was prepared by Mr. Daren Tang who was inaugurated as WIPO’s Director General in October 2020, shares the value of JPO’s new Mission, Vision and Values (MVV). Mr. Mori expressed support for this MTSP, along with his expectations that the Intellectual Property (IP) ecosystem is expanded through WIPO’s improvement of user convenience, as well as through strengthened assistance for Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) and startups.

Additionally, the Commissioner mentioned that Japan strongly hopes for WIPO to contribute toward a response to the COVID-19 pandemic in collaboration with its member states and organizations of the United Nations, as well as to solve global issues by utilizing IPs including WIPO GREEN activities. With such expectations for WIPO in mind, he delivered the statement that Japan will continuously support WIPO’s initiatives through all measures including the voluntary contributions that it has been making for more than 30 years, as well as close cooperation with the WIPO Japan Office.

The meetings will be held until October 8, during which time discussions will be conducted on numerous issues including reports on the various initiatives, budgets, and activities of each committee.
