The JPO Commissioner Gave a Speech at the 2021 AIPPI World Congress

On October 20, 2021, the Special Session of the 2021 AIPPI World Congress hosted by the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) *1 was held online.

The heads/executives of the intellectual property (IP) offices from Japan, the United States, Europe, China and Korea, as well as the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Mr. Daren Tang, gave speeches on “Challenges for IP Protection Post-Pandemic”.

In his speech, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) Commissioner Mr. MORI Kiyoshi reported on the JPO’s management and relief measures under COVID-19, such as the digitization of communications with users, and the Patent Examination Teleworking Support System.

In order to disseminate JPO’s initiatives through this event held by the international IP user group, as well as to deepen understanding of our measures among IP professionals around the world, he also introduced various JPO’s initiatives such as the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) *2 network of Japan -the world's largest- as well as its initiative on “Collective Examinations for IP Portfolio Supporting Business Strategy” *3.

  • *1 International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI): An international association aiming to contribute to the development of the intellectual property field worldwide through research on international trends and promotion of international exchange activities in the field, characterized by a variety of members including attorneys at law, patent attorneys, researchers and other IP professionals at companies, universities, and research institutions.
  • *2 This enables an application whose claims have been determined to be patentable in the Office of First Filing (OFF) to undergo an accelerated examination in the Office of Second Filing (OSF) with a simplified procedure, upon a request from an applicant on the basis of bilateral office agreements.
  • *3 This enables applicants to obtain different IP rights at the same time, in line with their business strategies.
