From Wednesday, October 20 to Friday, October 22, 2021, “Judicial Symposium on Intellectual Property / TOKYO 2021 - IP Dispute Resolution in Asia –” was held online and live streamed on the Internet in two languages (Japanese/English). It was co-hosted by the Japan Patent Office (JPO), the Supreme Court, the Intellectual Property High Court, the Ministry of Justice, the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, and the Intellectual Property Lawyers Network Japan. This symposium has been held annually since 2017 with the aim of deepening mutual understanding of judicial systems for intellectual property in participating countries. Again this year, in consideration of the Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), overseas IP judicial officials were invited to participate online.
JPO part of the program on Friday, 22 October, 2021 consisted of remarks by Mr. MORI Kiyoshi, Commissioner of the JPO, followed by a keynote lecture by Mr. KATSURA Masanori, Director-General, Trial and Appeal Department of the JPO, on the theme of "The current state of trials and appeals in Japan," lectures by administrative judges, etc. from China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Republic of Korea, and Singapore on the theme of "Determination of Inventive step on AI and IoT related inventions in participating countries," and a panel discussion on the theme of "Comparison of inventive step (using a hypothetical case)."
