The delegation of Japan, which includes Mr. HAMANO Koichi, Commissioner of the Japan Patent Office (JPO), and Mr. KATSURA Masanori, Deputy Commissioner of the JPO, is attending the meeting of General Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which begins on July 14th in Geneva, Switzerland. At the opening session, JPO Commissioner Hamano delivered a General Statement1 on behalf of Japan.
In his speech, JPO Commissioner HAMANO expressed his expectations in the areas of improving user convenience, raising IP awareness among young people, and expanding the IP ecosystem by providing more support for SMEs, start-ups and universities, as outlined in WIPO’s Medium-Term Strategic Plan (MTSP) 2022-2026 initiated by Director General Daren Tang.
In addition, JPO Commissioner HAMANO expressed strong expectations that WIPO GREEN and other IP-based initiatives will contribute to the resolution of global issues. He stated that Japan will continue to support WIPO’s initiatives through various measures, including the voluntary contributions it has been making for more than 30 years, as well as close cooperation with the WIPO Japan Office.
The meetings will run through July 22, and discussions will be conducted with regard to the various reports, budget, and activities of the respective committees.
